Most people visit Komodo Island to see one thing only, the Komodo Dragons. This is because Komodo is the only place in the world that you can meet them. However, many people don’t realize that the island offers much more than just the monitor lizards. Located in the Indonesian archipelago, Komodo Island is the ideal place for adventure travelers. The island which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands in the Republic of Indonesia.

How to get there

Labuan Bajo which is located on the island of Flores is the nearest town to Komodo Island. Since it is close the island, Labuan Bajo is the natural choice for people travelling to Komodo. You can catch a flight from either Jakarta or Bali to Labuan Bajo then take a taxi into town.

If you are on a budget, you can take a ferry then minibus then overnight bus then ferry which takes a little over 24 hours from Labuan Bajo to Lombok.

Where to stay

There are plenty of accommodation options in Komodo island.  You can either book prior travelling to the place or look for one on booking platforms once you arrive in Labuan Bajo. While it is probably one of the tiniest towns you will ever visit, Labuan Bajo is also not short of hotels and restaurants. The Komodo National Park

It would be a huge disgrace to visit Komodo Island and not tour the Komodo National Park. This park includes the three larger islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. It has also been selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. Naturally, going to see the Komodo dragons should be on top of your list of things to do.

These interesting creatures are the world’s largest monitor lizard. They can weigh up to 90 kgs, grow up to 8.5 feet long and run an impressive 12mph. The island is home to more than 3,000 dragons.

Komodo island offers 4 different trekking routes which include long and adventure, medium and short. The longest route takes up to 4 hours and is considered to be an adventure trek whereas the shortest route takes less than an hour. Remember to carry a bottle of water with you as it gets very hot when walking around the trails. Also, it is paramount that you stay with you stay with your guide at all times.

Visit the other two islands

Ensure you visit Padar Island which is one of the three islands that make up the Komodo National Park. By hiking to this Island’s summit, you stand the chance of witnessing one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Indonesia.  However, the hike is a little rough featuring sandy terrain and a plethora of loose rocks.

Therefore, you need to bring to a decent pair pf hiking shoes if you intend to make the trip up Padar, you need dedication, balance and a bottle of water.  Rinca Island is home to the second largest number of Komodo dragons.

The Pink Beach

Plenty of shores on Komodo Island have a touch of pink to them but none compares to the hue on Pink Beach. The pink hue is caused by a combination of small bits of red coral that get washed up by the waves and white sand. Watching where the pink sand meets the water is magical. The Pink Beach is also a great place to go snorkeling because of its abundance of tropical fish as well as the well-preserved stunning corals off the shoreline.
